Francois-Leon Sicard (1850-1942) of Aubagne, Provence, France, was a famous artist who joined 3 others and formed the renowned BACS Pottery Factory before WW1, after which he pursued his work alone. A street in Vallauris is named after him where the Vallauris Museum was built. This antique traditional Provencal ceramic cicada, designed in 1895, dates from 1930. Black & gray on upper body with the underbody in ochre yellow where it is autographed. In like new condition with no issues of any kind. Used as a lucky charm on the table or wall in Provencal homes to hold many things, such as fireplace matches which are included here. Measures 10”L x 4 1/2”W.
