condition: good

Got here a complete set of like-new soft cover books by QPBC called SACRED WRITINGS. If you want to learn about 6 major world religions, this complete set is for you. Printed in USA. (c) 1992.

The six volumes of Sacred Writings, edited by Jaroslav Pelikan, provide decisive and influential texts by which the general reader may better understand the six world religious traditions. This set covers:

1. Judaism: The Tanakh
2. Christianity: The Apocrypha and The New Testament
3. Islam: The Qur'an
4. Confucianism: The Analects of Confucius
5. Hinduism: The Rig Veda
6. Buddhism: The Dhammapada

Bonus book is called On Searching the Scriptures. It's a "companion volume to Sacred Writings". Professor Pelikan explains the title, composition and authorship, language and text, canon and authority, traditional interpretation, and his choice of translation for each of the sacred books. Six stimulating essays suggest ways in which both religious and nonreligious readers may explore and appreciate these sacred books.

Each sacred book can define the entire character of a people and its view of history. Each sacred book is also a prayer book, or contains a prayer book. In what they pray and in how they pray, the world religions are at one and the same time the closest together, closer than in doctrine or morality or in other ritual, but also the farthest apart. Yet as Professor Pelikan says, "A modern reader who puts two ro more of these sacred books side by side will repeatedly find large areas of similarity, especially in their prescriptions for the life of virtue and justice. The grounds of hope for world peace and for harmony within one neighborhood or nation lie in such similarity..."

Professor Pelikan is Sterling Professor of History at Yale University. He is the author of Jesus Through the Centuries and The Christian Tradition in five volumes and the editor of The World Treasury of Modern Religious Thought.
