condition: like new
Gorgeous “Sweetheart” design casual bentwood dining chairs, modeled directly on Michael Thonet’s No 16 chair first made in the late 1800s in eastern Europe. Same material, same construction, with Made in Romania branded underneath all four chairs. These are at least vintage, and very possibly true antiques based on the condition of the wood and hardware before undergoing a careful and thoughtful transformation to suit today’s tastes.

The chairs were thoroughly prepped (cleaning, sanding, patching with wood filler, priming, and minor structural enhancements to one chair) before receiving multiple coats of Krylon Fusion spray paint in Gloss Jungle Green, which gives off a decidedly “green apple” vibe. The paint was carefully applied in light layers to ensure a factory-like finish that will stand the test of time. The color will bring a smile to your face and encourage you to linger over breakfast or afternoon coffee on the sunporch as we approach summer.

Indications are that the high-quality seat cushion under the new fabric was made in the 1960s…and is not the original cushion. The tone and geometric pattern of the new fabric (which has been scotchgarded) is a perfect companion to the lively chair frame.

Chairs like these in a range of colors can be ordered new from Thonet in Germany and select US retailers, albeit at a far higher price.

What a great marriage of vintage and modernity…and what a perfect season to introduce this cheery quartet to your home. Even better is that all the work has been done!

These chairs are timeless, lightweight, sturdy, versatile, and fun! What more could you want in casual seating?

And if you are interested in the newly stripped and tan-washed 36" round butcher-block table, please see my other listing.
