Extremely rare, especially in the U.S. is a Stainless Steel USSR Soviet Prison Barrel Knife made by a Soviet prisoner. Length with the bottle opener side exposed measures 5 & 1/8 inches. When unscrewed and flipped it exposes a 3 1/2inch clip blade with an over all length of 8 inches. The barrel area has a nonslip cross-line grip.
Obtained from a Ukrainian friend, this Barrel knife was made by a USSR Soviet Prisoner in the 1980s, prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, during which Ukraine became an independent nation.
This Soviet Prison made Barrel knife seemingly served as a bottle opener with the opposing smaller end having a small hole for a key chain loop. This design initially served the Soviet prisoner as a Kubotan -(a self-defense weapon derived from the Japanese Yawara stick)- with the bottle opener exposed and a pointy end for sharper more painful strikes on bony areas etc. However, both sides of a Kubotan are used for striking.
(My Ukrainian friend showed me this item thinking I'd be very interested in buying it because of my extensive background in Aikijujutsu, an ancient Japanese combat art mainly used by top tier Samurai of the Feudal Japan period. Aikijujutsu was what made only the best Samurai of Japan the most well-rounded, feared warriors in the world, with countless open-hand techniques that also included training with many weapons, including the Katana)
